Directory of Medicinal and Edible Chinese Herbs

The health administrative department of the State Council has issued four batches of lists of substances that are both food and Chinese medicinal materials. There are a total of 106 substances. They are as follows:

【First Batch】.Notice of the Ministry of Health on Further Standardizing the Management of Raw Materials for Health Foods (Weifa Jianfa [2002] No. 51):

Angelica sinensis, rhizoma kaempferiae, saffron (also known as “safflower” in spices and seasonings), tsaoko, turmeric, long pepper.

【Third Batch】.Announcement on Nine Newly Added Substances, Including Codonopsis, That Are Traditionally Both Food and Chinese Medicinal Materials (Announcement No. 9 of 2023):

Codonopsis root, desert cistanche, Dendrobium officinale, American ginseng, astragalus root, lingzhi, Asiatic cornelian cherry fruit, gastrodia elata, Eucommia leaf.

【Fourth Batch】.2024 Announcement on Four Substances, Including rehmannia root, That Are Traditionally Both Food and Chinese Medicinal Materials:

Rehmannia root, ophiopogon root, asparagus root, citrus grandis ‘Tomentosa’.

Definition of 【High-Quality Medicinal and Edible Products】

Products manufactured in accordance with T/HNYJNYXH 《High-Quality Medicinal and Edible Product Standard》, conforming to the product varieties specified in the national 《Complete Directory of Medicinal and Edible Products》, which can be consumed as food or used medicinally and have specific functions.

Product varieties specified in the 《Complete Directory of Medicinal and Edible Products》 may apply for high-quality medicinal and edible product certification. The certificate can be obtained only after passing the audit conducted by a third-party certification body.
